If you're looking for something that's going to make you look and feel like a million bucks, there's one option that will never let you down: high heel shoes. Whether you work in a people-facing job or have a night out with friends planned, there's nothing quite like slipping into a pair of heels and feeling like you can conquer the world.

That's why we love them so much—they give us confidence in ourselves and make us feel invincible.

This isn’t just the case for women either: people of all genders love high heel shoes! After all, we all know how good it feels to put on a pair of sexy platform shoes when we’re ready to get our mojo back.

But where exactly did our fascination with high heels come from?
Let us tell you – we’re here to bare all, babe!

High heels: a brief history

We all love high heel shoes. They're the ultimate sign of fashion, style and confidence. But why do we love them so much?

Carrie Bradshaw certainly has a huge part to play. From her enviable $40,000 Manolo collection to her fabulous fashion choices, Bradshaw’s shoe-drobe was to die for.

But that’s not exactly where our love for shoes started.

Where it all began: flashback 5,000 years…

Shoes have an amazing history. Like most things that have been around for a long time (like cars or computers), high heel shoes have come a long way since their inception.

Did you know? High heel shoes were originally made for men.

According to Rafael Gomes, Savannah College of Art and Design’s exhibition director, we can trace our fascination with high heel shoes back to 15th century Persia*. Originally made with uncomfortable metal spikes, high heels were first used by male horse riders to keep their feet from slipping out of their stirrups.
Safe to say today's high heel shoes look very different from their ancestors! Instead of sharp metal points designed to pierce through leather boots, modern high heels are made from luxurious materials like leather and suede.

Over the years, high heel shoes have changed drastically. Appearing in Europe among male aristocrats, high heels were worn by men to create a more commanding presence. Unlike modern shoes, it’s thought that shoes could be worn without making a sound, allowing the wearers to appear formidable and powerful. According to etymologists, this is where the high heel shoe got its name: meaning “well-heeled” and wealthy**.

Despite their initial exclusivity to the nobility and those with significant wealth, high heels grew increasingly popular with the working classes and became a wardrobe staple for decades to come.

Throughout the 18th century, however, high heel shoes started to become more gendered. Women’s shoes became higher, narrower and more ornamental while men’s shoes became broader and sturdier – somewhat like we see today.

High heels of the present day

Flash forward to the 21st century and things are changing once again. Thanks to legends like David Bowie and icons like RuPaul, men are once again rocking the high heel shoe – and looking fabulous while doing so! From pin-up couture shoes to thigh-high heels, high heel shoes are a favourite part of everyone’s wardrobe.

It's not just because they're a status symbol—although that's a large part of it. High heel shoes make us feel more powerful and confident in our own skin. We know that when we walk into a room wearing our favourite pair of stilettos, everyone will be taking notice. A well-made pair of high heel platform shoes or thigh-high boots are sure to turn a few heads!

But what makes high heels so great? And why do men and women both love them so much? Let's take a look at some reasons why these shoes are so desirable:

Sex appeal

High heel shoes are sexy! They give the illusion of longer, leaner legs and they're one of the few things that can give even the most conservative outfit a bit of an edge.

Confidence

When you wear heels, your posture changes. You stand up straighter, which makes you feel more confident and powerful. You heard it here first: wearing high heel shoes is like wearing armour!

High heel shoes also accentuate your curves and make you feel more confident in your body. They add a sense of elegance to any outfit, making you feel like you're wearing something truly special.

High heels aren't just for women; everyone loves a pair of customized high heel shoes.
